Struggling with what to call your Bearded Dragon(s)?

Here, you can find a long list of bearded dragon names to choose from. Whilst the list contains many real names of bearded dragons from around the world, there are also a lot of new names that I’m not aware are being used.

When trying to think of a name for your bearded dragon, you can draw inspiration from things like; characters from your favorite TV program/film, music artists you like, favorite sports stars, favorite people from history and words that mean ‘dragon’ in different languages.

Can Bearded Dragons Eat Bananas? – The Definitive Answer

Following on from my previous post about what to feed bearded dragons, I’ve had a few emails asking if bearded dragons can eat bananas (such as the one below).

Hi Dan,

You said in your article on the bearded dragon’s diet that “You should avoid citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and limes”, well how about bananas? The owner of my pet store says I shouldn’t feed my beardie banana but one of my friends says it’s okay. What are your thoughts?

In answer to Ronnie’s question, although the bearded dragon can enjoy chopped banana from time to time without suffering any ill-effects, it does have the potential to harm your beardie.

This is because bananas contain a lot of phosphorous and the ratio of phosphorous to calcium in reptiles (including bearded dragons) should be around 1:2 (that’s one part phosphorous to every 2 parts of calcium).

If the phosphorous levels in a bearded dragon get too high, their body tries to maintain the correct balance by obtaining calcium from elsewhere – and it is usually taken from the bones.

This causes the bones to soften and results in Metabolic Bone Disease or MBD, which is a particularly nasty disease for reptiles because it causes their bones to become brittle and break very easily.

For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend feeding bananas to your bearded dragon. There are plenty of other fruits it can enjoy that are much safer for them to ingest, so in my opinion, there’s really no reason to take the risk.

Saying that if you have fed bananas to your beardie in the past, as long as it has been in small quantities there’s probably nothing to worry about but if you feed your beardie bananas regularly I’d suggest removing them from it’s diet immediately.

Feeding Bearded Dragons

Feeding bearded dragons is relatively easy compared to other lizards and reptiles.

They are omnivorous lizards, which means they can eat food sources that are from both the animal and plant kingdoms giving you a wide variety of choice in what you feed them.

In the wild, they have been known to eat vegetables, fruit, insects and even small mammals such as baby mice (pinkies) and small lizards. However, in captivity, you should restrict their diet to mainly leafy green vegetables, fruit and insects.

Mice and pinkies should be avoided because there is risk that your bearded dragon may not be able to digest it properly, they are high in fat and, in some countries such as the UK, the feeding of live mice is illegal.

The age of your bearded dragon should be taken into account when choosing their diet.

Baby bearded dragons (12-18 months and younger) require a lot more protein than fully grown adults so should be fed a mix of around 75% insects (e.g. live crickets) and 25% vegetables. A good rule of thumb is to feed your beardie as many crickets as it can eat in 10 minutes:

three times a day from birth
twice a day from 3-4 months old
once a day from 7-8 months old

Adult beardies only need to be fed once every day.

When your bearded dragon reaches adulthood (between 12 and 18 months), it will not need as much protein and it’s diet should switch to around 75% vegetables/fruit and 25% live food. It is recommended to wean them off the larger quantities of live food slowly over a period of weeks by gradually reducing how much they are fed. This is because many bearded dragons will not take kindly to their insect-intake being taken away overnight.

Some bearded dragons may be stubborn and refuse to eat vegetables, so you may find it useful to withhold their livefoods until they eat their greens.

All types of food that you feed your bearded dragon should be small enough for it to digest properly. This means you will have to chop up the fruit and veg into small pieces and ensure any insects are not too big – a good rule of thumb is to avoid feeding your bearded dragon anything that is longer than the distance between it’s eyes.

Now, lets take a look at the types of food from each food group that are a good source of nutrition for your bearded dragon.

Vegetables

Your bearded dragon’s primary food source should be a good mixture of vegetables, particularly leafy greens.

Collard greens are one of the best vegetables to feed your bearded dragon along with turnip greens, mustard greens and dandelion greens. If you have dandelions growing in your garden, dig them up, chop them up and feed them your beardie. They can also eat the dandelion’s flowers.

You can also mix in cabbage, squash, green beans, peas, parsnips, turnips, peppers and carrots to give your bearded dragon a variety of flavours and texture.

One green to avoid is lettuce because the high water content can make your bearded dragon poorly (remember, bearded dragons come from the Australian deserts where water is scarce – I’ll be talking more about water in a later post).

Fruit

The bearded dragon will also eat a variety of fruits including peeled apple, apricot, cherries, cranberries, grapes, grapefruit, pear strawberries and pineapple.

Again, these should be finely chopped and should be used to supplement the vegetables. This means only giving them around 10-20% fruit, with the rest of their food made up of vegetables.

You should avoid citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and limes which can be hazardous to a bearded dragon’s health. Also avoid tomatoes.

Live Food

Live crickets are perhaps the best live feed you can give your bearded dragon because as well as being nutritious and a great source of protein, they are also relatively cheap and easy to obtain.

Locusts, silkworms and roaches are also a good source of nutrients.

Waxworms and superworms can also be fed to your bearded dragon, however they should be reserved for special treats (perhaps a few times a month) as they are high in fat.

It is generally not advisable to feed your beardie any insects that you have caught yourself, as they may be carrying pesticides or parasites that can cause harm.

Calcium

Finally, I want to mention that calcium is a very important nutrient in your bearded dragon’s diet and it probably won’t get the amount of calcium it needs from it’s food alone.

For this reason, around twice a week you should dust your bearded dragon’s food with a calcium supplement.

Bearded Dragons as Pets

There are many reasons why bearded dragons make such great pets and in this post I’m going to be discussing some of them.

Friendly

The bearded dragon is a good-natured, docile and friendly lizard that enjoys to be touched, held and stroked. Many bearded dragons will happily sit on your shoulder and provide you with company whilst you go about your household tasks.

Size

Bearded dragons are not too large (between 12 and 24cm long), which means, compared to other reptiles, they do not take up a lot of space. You will need a vivarium or tank for your bearded dragons, which can be quite long (4 or 5 feet) but this makes an interesting and aesthetic focus point for the room they are in.

Diet

Bearded dragons are omnivorous and enjoy a wide range of different foods that are readily available from your local supermarket or pet store. Because they don’t have any specific or unusual dietary requirements, their diet can easily be catered for. You can find out more about what to feed your bearded dragon here.

Fun

You can’t play with a bearded dragon like you can with a dog, but they can provide lots of viewing entertainment as they scuttle around your home. They also love to be held and stroked under the chin.

Easy To Care For

Compared to other lizards and reptiles, Bearded Dragons are one of the easiest species to care for. Of course, you do have to cater for their environmental requirements by providing a vivarium for them to live in and you do have to make sure their dietary needs are met but once you’ve set it up and got into a routine, it takes very little time out of your schedule.

Same Sleeping Patterns

Like humans, bearded dragons are diurnal, which means they are awake during the day and sleep at night. This means that unless you work the night-shift, your bearded dragon will be awake and able to interact at the same times as you.

Not Too Rare

Finally, although bearded dragons make an interesting and unusual pet, they are not so rare that you will have difficulty finding a breeder to get one from. In addition, because of their popularity as a household pet, there is lots of information, both online and offline, about caring for these wonderful creatures.

For my first post, I’d like to tell you about the naming conventions used for bearded dragons.

Although the term ‘Bearded Dragon’ is, by far, the most common name for these creatures, occasionally you may hear other terms used. Some of these terms are the scientific names used for classification, whilst others are simply different words that mean the same thing.

Below is a list of names that may be used to described the bearded dragon to help you understand their context when used in different situation.

Lizard

The Bearded Dragon belongs to a class of animals called reptiles (that also includes snakes), that is further divided into a sub-order called lizards (or lacerilia). Lizards typically have limbs and ears and range in size from tiny geckos to large komodo dragons. Bearded Dragons are somewhere in the middle.

Agamid (or Agaminae or Agamidae)

Lizards are divide again into a number of families, one of which is the Agamidae. These lizards are referred to as Agamids and again they they can be divided into sub-families, one of which is the Agaminae subfamily. Bearded dragons are from the Agamidae family and subfamily Agaminae.

Pogona

Below the family and subfamily classification groups, there are a number of genera. The bearded dragon belongs to the Pogona genus, which contains seven species and all seven are what we refer to as bearded dragons.

Pogona vitticeps

Pogona vitticeps is one of the seven species of pogona and refers to the most common species of bearded dragon to have as a pet. If you have a bearded dragon at home, it is very likely to be pogona vitticeps.

Central Bearded Dragon & Inland Bearded Dragon

The terms Central Bearded Dragon and Inland Bearded Dragon usually refer to the Pogona vitticeps species because they originate from the arid semi-desert regions of central Australia.

Hello World!

I’d like to thank you for visiting my new website all about looking after and caring for bearded dragons – one of the most awesome animals on the planet (along with the Honey Badger).

The bearded dragon (also known as the Pogona) is a genus of seven species of lizard that come from Australia.

The most common species to kept as a domestic pet is the Pogona vitticeps and this is what I will be focussing on in my blog.

I’ll be covering topics such as health, diet, cages/tanks and how to give your bearded dragon the best quality of life possible.
